Silence

I've been thinking about Silence ever since I saw Into Great Silence ... and Silence is really something one can build upon.

It may even be the holy ground of all being.

As I was shutting down the store the other day, cleaning up some of the wooden blocks that a child whose mother had expressed interest in silk handkerchiefs had been playing with downstairs, I was struck by how those wooden blocks were rooted and grounded in Silence.

Here are some thoughts.

The real enemy of Silence is not Sound, but Emptinesss.

Silence and Sound are from different orders of Being and are not even analgous across those orders.

Silence is to Absence as Song is to Sound.

Emptiness is to Absence as Noise is to Sound.

Emptiness is the true enemy of Silence.

Emptiness is profane Absence or Absence profaned.

Silence is holy Absence or Absence sanctified.

Noise is profane Sound or Sound profaned.

Song is holy sound or Sound sanctified.

Hamlet's last words: "The rest is silence."

So much hangs on what he means by 'silence.'

'Silence' as Silence?

'Silence' as Emptiness?

'Silence' as Absence?

'Silence' as Song?

to be contiued ...
